    Job Description

    The Principal Mechanical Engineer performs broad based mechanical design and development including: engagement and requirements assessment, mechanical architecture design, key components selection, as well as planning for integration and test.  This engineer can coordinate and manage, often through a remote team, broad based product development support for clients.  Also important is the ability to support new business development initiatives.  Success in this role is predicated on an individual’s ability to contribute technically across a broad spectrum of technologies, and in industries with varying regulation environments.  Time and work management will take place in a distributed matrix environment, as a principal level individual contributor and technical lead.


    Primary Technical Responsibilities:

    • Design and development of complex electromechanical systems for regulated medical, industrial, automotive and aerospace verticals
    • Working with cross disciplinary teams to author system requirements and performance specifications
    • Lead technical teams from initial design to final product delivery
    • Knowledge of Mechanical engineering design best-practices for the Medical Device industry; Semiconductor equipment design; Safety and Ergonomics standards; manufacturing integration
    • Knowledge of product data management best practices including familiarity with relevant modern tools and systems
    • Creating integration plans to outline tasks and sequences for the implementation of new process controls
    • Assist in drafting test plans and verification procedures for mechanical systems and component verification
    • Leading and/or providing technical peer review as required
    • Identify, track, and assess risks and mitigation plans


    Primary Business Responsibilities:

    • New business development support as evidenced by an ability to; represent and communicate Altran’s capabilities, listening, asking clarifying questions and integrating new information and expressing yourself with clear and concise writing and skills
    • Supporting the proposal generation process by obtaining detailed information, and requirements, structuring and organizing undefined tasks, project planning and accurate estimations  
    • A basic understanding of account and program management and an ability collaborate with business partners in identifying technical solutions
    • Provide technical and thought leadership in customer meetings as a subject matter expert in mechanical design/fabrication processes
    • Ability to communicate complex engineering ideas and principles in a manner that non-engineering clients and decision makers can effectively use in meeting their business objectives



    • Strong analytical skills in thermal management, vibration, and stress (static and dynamic)
    • Effective use of one or more of the following CAD tools:
      • SolidWorks
      • PTC Creo
      • Siemens NX
    • Experience with one the following CAD data management software:
      • Enterprise PDM
      • PTC Windchill
      • Siemens Teamcenter
      • Agile
    • Vendor / Sub-contractor selection and management
    • Expertise in two or more technical specialties:
      • Systems Engineering Principles
      • Fluidics System Design
      • Mechanism Design
      • Opto-mechanical Design
      • Thermal Management/Design
      • High density electromechanical systems
      • DFX Principles
      • Geometric tolerances and analysis
      • Manufacturing Processes (Sheet Metal, Machining /milling, Injection Molding, weldments, etc.)
    • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering
    • 10+ years’ experience with a minimum of 5 of those years in an engineering lead role that included business support for multi-disciplinary design, development, and delivery of products across the full development life cycle
    • Ability and wiliness to travel to client sites with the possibility of extended stays
    • Experience working with design teams in multiple geographical locations.
    • Ability to meet position requirements with minimal direct supervision.
